Feature

Features of embalming

  • Slowing post-mortem changes Embalming slows discoloration, drying, decomposition, and odor so families can spend the time until the funeral with greater peace of mind.

  • No dry ice required You do not need to place heavy, cold dry ice beside your loved one. (Depending on the condition of the remains, dry ice may be used in combination.)

  • More flexibility for the funeral With more time available, you are not limited to traditional formats and can reflect the deceased’s wishes and the family’s feelings more fully in the service.

  • Time for the funeral you need Whether you must wait for cremation schedules, an officiant, work commitments, or guests traveling from afar, you can take the time you need without rushing farewell.

  • Reducing secondary infection risk Even when there is concern about secondary infection from hepatitis, tuberculosis, HIV, MRSA, novel influenza, or other conditions, embalming allows children and those in fragile health to safely touch and say goodbye.

About 65.2% of remains may carry pathogens

Pathological studies have found that remains may carry pathogens in about 65.2% of cases, with serious infections such as hepatitis or tuberculosis in about 14.4%. Data like this supports early embalming as an effective response.

Embalming

Helping your loved one look as they did in life

Embalming

As they were then

We restore fullness to the face lost after long illness, repair injuries from accidents or disasters, and help families say farewell in a form close to how they remember. At your request, we can apply makeup to address gauntness, changes in complexion, or discoloration of the limbs.

Washing

We wash the body and hair, then shave facial hair as needed. We gently close the eyes and mouth for a peaceful expression and assess the overall condition of the remains.

Embalming flow

Sanitation and preservation

We make small incisions in several places, inject preservative fluid, and replace blood with the embalming solution. After the incisions are sutured, we wash the body and hair again.

Restoration

When injuries from accidents or other causes are present, we perform restorative work as needed, including restoring fullness to a gaunt face.

Our facilities

IMS JAPAN embalming rooms meet facility standards set by the Japan Funeral Service Association (IFSA).
Rigorous sanitation and waste management help prevent contamination and secondary infection from bacteria, viruses, and other hazards from the remains.

Embalming

HVAC systems

Regulations on hazardous chemical substances limit formaldehyde (gas) concentration in fluids used and require specialized ventilation.
Systems protect the indoor work environment while preventing bacteria, viruses, and harmful gases from spreading outdoors. We also operate wastewater treatment plants and sterilized exhaust ducts to prioritize safety and the environment.

Embalming

Wastewater and waste disposal

Liquids from embalming are treated in compliance with water pollution control, sewerage, and local ordinances, including sterilization, disinfection, and concentration where required.
Waste from our facilities is handled as infectious waste by licensed contractors. We maintain strict hygiene and a biohazard control level comparable to hospitals to avoid carrying contaminants outside the facility.
